They’ve been divorced for almost two decades but you would still be hard pressed to find an instance when Tom Cruise isn’t mentioned while talking about Nicole Kidman.
It’s a fact that wasn’t lost on Kidman herself while doing the promotional rounds for her new film, Boy Erased.
In an interview with The Observer, Kidman was asked whether she saw any similarities between her role as an evangelical Christian preacher’s wife in Boy Erased and her marriage to Scientologist Tom Cruise.
“I have a husband now,” Kidman replied. “I feel out of respect for him I don’t want to talk about that. It has been 20 years.”
When pressed further about if she thought there were any likenesses between her past and the role, Kidman said she was at a stage in her life where she didn’t want to talk about her relationship with Cruise.
“I have come to the point where I can say: ‘I am not going to keep discussing my ex.’ It’s nice for me to be able to say that, finally,” Kidman explained.
“Nobody would sit at a dinner party and answer questions about their ex while their current partner is sitting there.
“It is disrespectful to Keith and to Tom. I would rather be a respectful woman. I have read stuff I have said in the past and thought: ‘Bloody hell, Nicole! Keep your mouth shut!’”
Kidman was married to Cruise from 1990 to 2001, the couple adopting children Connor, 23 and Isabella, 25, during that time.
The Hours star left Scientology after her split from the actor and has had little public contact with her adopted children in the years since.
Kidman has also only spoken about her marriage to Cruise on only a handful of occasions, telling New York Magazine in October she was “reluctant” to speak about the topic.
“Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love, and it almost feels disrespectful,” Kidman said.
The Lion actor said her marriage at a young age to one of Hollywood’s biggest stars had been “protection” from predators in the entertainment industry.
“I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up,” she said.
Kidman married singer Urban in 2006 and the couple have two daughters together — Sunday Rose, 10, and Faith Margaret, seven.
